Scope
Design and launch the Bargeld Code feature - an in-app solution allowing users to withdraw or deposit cash via barcode at retail partner locations, without relying on ATMs or traditional bank branches. This product supports our bank’s vision to streamline operations, reduce physical infrastructure dependency, and expand cash accessibility.
Process
We began by identifying shifting user needs in an increasingly digital banking environment, where flexible, ATM-independent cash access was becoming a critical expectation.
Our team mapped out first-time user journeys to ensure activation steps (including postbox setup) were secure and intuitive. We defined key states - registration, barcode generation, and location selection—through iterative wireframes and journey maps.
Design challenges included translating complex security requirements (e.g. postbox activation, barcode lifespan, transaction limits) into a simple, frictionless UI. We implemented a clean, accessible design language using our newly built design system to ensure brand consistency and WCAG compliance.
We closely collaborated with engineering and security teams to prototype and test flows for edge cases and real-world scanning scenarios, ensuring reliability at partner locations like Rossmann and Rewe.
Solution
The final design enables users to generate a secure barcode for cash transactions - valid for 2 hours and capped at €300 per transaction, €999 daily. The UI clearly communicates limits, status, and location support, minimising user error.
The launch was met with strong adoption and positive coverage in Tagesspiegel. Users highlighted its convenience, clarity, and the seamless experience across supported retail partners.
This feature is now a core part of our digital banking ecosystem—fully integrated with the new Postbox and Branch Finder tools, and built on a scalable, accessible design system that supports future innovation.
